Great Style in 5 Minutes

If you’re like basically every woman I know, life is full. Most of us would like to feel great about our style on a daily basis, AND would like it to be easy!

My favorite approach to achieving this is what I call upstyling - basically, by incorporating pieces into your wardrobe that are higher on a scale of style value, you can look well put together in a matter of minutes - and with no more effort than pulling on your favorite tee and jeans.

Breaking down the look

That’s why I loved this look from @smallneeds on Instagram. The outfit is simple and easy to recreate - in fact you could make it a go-to template, and never again have the dreaded “I’ve got nothing to wear!” sensation while you stare at a closet full of clothes.

You really only need three elements for this look:

Chances are good you’ve already got a few applicable pieces in your closet right now! Speaking of applicable pieces - this look would be super cute with a high waisted denim skirt for a slightly more dressed up version.

What makes a good statement blouse?

The top in this look is a vintage Diana Freis - a designer who was shockingly unknown to me until the day I saw this jaw-dropping blouse. Her overarching themes are ruffles, mixed prints, and flowing fabric - it was love at first sight for me!

But a statement blouse doesn’t have to be loud prints and ruffles.

Other ways to make a bold statement include:

  • Unusual or asymmetrical silhouettes

  • High detail tailoring

  • Rich fabrics

If you’d like to find a blouse along the lines of the original, I’ve made it easy for you! This board on Pinterest is filled with fab statement blouses (including plenty from Diane Freis) and contrasting belts. As always, I‘ll keep adding more as I come across them.

Here's a little preview of my favorite finds:

I skipped the denim because you’ve probably got a few favorite pairs in your closet already. While I love secondhand first as the most sustainable option when you‘re looking to bring something new (to you) into your wardrobe, using what you already own is the most sustainable option overall! :)
